Wayanad: The Emerald Heart of Kerala

I've always been drawn to places where the air is fresh, the landscapes are painted in a hundred shades of green, and life moves at a gentle, unhurried pace. That’s exactly what I found in Wayanad, Kerala’s enchanting hill station. Tucked away in the misty folds of the Western Ghats, Wayanad is a land where every turn reveals something magical—from ancient caves and cascading waterfalls to vast tea plantations and whispering forests. My trip to Wayanad was an unforgettable journey, a perfect blend of serene relaxation and thrilling adventure.

Day 1: Chasing the Clouds at Chembra Peak and the Heart-Shaped Lake

My Wayanad adventure began with a trek to the district’s highest point—Chembra Peak. We started early in the morning, breathing in the cool mountain air mixed with the scent of damp earth. The trail wound its way through lush tea plantations and dense forest paths. The highlight of the climb was Hridayasarassu, the heart-shaped lake that sits just below the summit—straight out of a fairytale. Reaching the top rewarded us with a breathtaking 360-degree view of the rolling green hills, making every step of the climb worthwhile.

Day 2: A Peek into History at Edakkal Caves and a Sunset at Banasura Sagar Dam

On the second day, I journeyed back in time at the Edakkal Caves. These aren’t ordinary caves—they’re massive rock formations etched with prehistoric carvings believed to be over 6,000 years old. The climb up is steep but rewarding, offering sweeping views of the valley once you reach the top.

Later in the day, as the sun dipped low, I visited the Banasura Sagar Dam—India’s largest earthen dam. The vast reservoir, framed by the majestic Banasura Hills, was a sight to behold. I enjoyed a peaceful boat ride, watching as the golden light danced across the water and the hills cast long, soft shadows—a perfect way to end the day.

Day 3: The Roar of Waterfalls and the Calm of Pookode Lake

My final day in Wayanad was devoted to exploring its waterfalls and lakes. First stop: Soochipara Falls. The short forest trek leading to the three-tiered waterfall was thrilling, with the sound of rushing water growing louder at every step. The falls were majestic—a refreshing escape into nature’s raw beauty.

Next, I headed to Pookode Lake, a serene freshwater lake cradled by forested hills. The calm waters mirrored the trees and clouds above. A quiet boat ride here offered a peaceful contrast to the earlier adventure, allowing me to simply sit back and absorb Wayanad’s tranquil charm.

Wayanad Travel Tips

Best Time to Visit: October to May (post-monsoon season) is perfect for trekking and sightseeing.

Getting Around: Hire a local cab or private vehicle for convenience, as public transport options are limited.

Don’t Miss: Visit a tea or coffee plantation, and sample authentic Kerala cuisine at a local eatery. The classic puttu and kadala curry is a must-try!

Wayanad is more than just a destination—it’s an experience that rejuvenates your soul. The misty hills, lush greenery, and warm hospitality of its people make it a place you’ll carry in your heart long after you’ve left. I went in search of peace and beauty, and Wayanad gave me both in abundance.
